Meet Nicole Williams the beautiful founder of Maya Chinese Medicine

Nicole Williams is the founder behind Maya Chinese Medicine in South Melbourne. Nicole has been driven by a passion is to treat the body as a whole, taking into consideration the mind and emotions and how they can act on the physical body.

One of the translations of the word ‘Maya’ comes down to mean ‘the power in which we turn an idea into a reality’!

Nicole, can you please tell me a little about Chinese Medicine and how you got involved?

About 5000 years ago, Chinese Medicine began. Its purpose is to balance the body into a state of well-being. Chinese Medicine includes various herbs and acupuncture.

Acupuncture affects the neurotransmitters and hormones that float around the body. It also releases the “happy hormones” (endorphins) which can bring down the level of cortisol which is in overdrive during times of stress.

Acupuncture can leave people feeling harmonised and in a meditative state. It also assists with pain management as well as internal issues such as women’s health, menstrual irregularities, fertility help, digestive concerns, emotional well-being such as stress, anxiety, depression, and insomnia.

The acupuncture points works on pathways that intertwine throughout the body, it can activate these pathways and helps rebalance the organs, blood flow, and energy.

Nicole, what are the trends you are seeing?

Mental health- stress, anxiety just seems to be a normal part of life now, I continue to see an increase in digestive health issues including gut imbalances and food sensitivities.

Fertility issues are also on the increase, we try to provide guidance and advice about all the various effects, alongside educating Women on the health concerns with using the contraceptive pill.

Beyond blue have produced a survey that sees;

  • 45% of Australians will suffer from a mental health condition in their lifetime- that can include anxiety and depression

Australian psychology society reports;

  • 35% of Australians have said to have high levels of distress throughout their lifetime
  • 85% said that watching television was the best way for them to deal with stress

Way ahead reports;

  • 75% of Australian’s surveyed admitted that stresses in their lives adversely effected their physical health, while only 64% said it effected their mental health.
  • 51% do not seek help for the stress

I also believe there needs to be Need more education for Women’s health in particular;

  • Period health
  • Healthy cycle
  • Myths about contraceptive pill
